The Cutest Not So Scary Halloween Card Ever!
Maybe you have little ones or maybe you just don't enjoy the frights – either way I am betting you will get a huge kick out of this not so scary Halloween card!
When I first saw this set in the Holiday Catalog, it didn't grab me. But then I spotted the cute examples on page 50 and I just knew that little duck would become a star. I mean, really, who doesn't love a little duckie all dressed up like a PIRATE, of all things? He's SO cute! Take a closer look at this little fella:
On this project I used my Stampin' Blends because I really wanted to give our little friend some real dimension. All the Stampin' Blends (except for Bronze and Ivory) come in pairs of one light and one dark of each shade. I LOVE this because it makes coloring and shading so easy!
Here, I used Light Mango Melody all over him and then went back with Dark Mango Melody around his edges to add that “shadow” that really makes him look like he's a chubby little trick or treater. I did the same thing with the Smoky Slate Stampin' Blends on his outfit.
And you might notice on his feet and his little trick or treat tote that there are no “marker lines” which is another reason I totally adore my Stampin' Blends, especially since Stampin' Up! keeps adding new colors!
I used a traditional orange and a brighter green and purple to emphasize that not so scary Halloween vibe. I really like making my own backgrounds using greeting or other images because I can create a totally custom, very coordinated look with not a lot of trouble thanks to the way Stampin' Up! creates their stamp sets. There is usually an image or greeting that you can use as a background motif that will make your focal image really pop.
The other thing that is SO cool about this little guy is that I used my Scan n Cut to cut him out. I am really starting to love this machine because this machine is awesome for those times when images don't have coordinating dies. If there are dies for a stamp set I love, I always get them because that is the fastest, easiest way to get a perfect cut. But for those that don't, that Scan n Cut is saving my life!
The other reason this card is a winner is that I used up four scraps – three card stock and one ribbon – that I might otherwise have filed or thrown out. Sometimes you see “stuff” on your table left over from other projects and they just call out to be included. Here's a peek at the focal image so you can see where I tucked that little piece of ribbon that really wouldn't have been able to be used otherwise. Using the 10 Second Bow Maker gives me a WHOLE lot less waste than I used to have but I still end up with these little pieces that I trim and I hate to throw them out – all I can picture is a roll of ribbon made up of scraps! So when I can use scraps, I am psyched!
The Supplies
Here are all the supplies I used to make this card. To order these supplies simply click on a pic below.
Step By Step Instuctions
- Start by stamping your duck in Tuxedo Black ink onto Whisper White card stock.
- Use your Scan N Cut to cut him out or fussy cut him.
- Start with your Pumpkin Pie ink and stamp your “trick or treat” onto a piece of Whisper White (4″ x 5-1/4″) in a random pattern. Repeat this with Gorgeous Grape ink and Granny Apple Green ink. Attach this piece to your Gorgeous Grape card base (5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″).
- Attach two rectangular scraps of Pumpkin Pie card stock and Granny Apple Green in the lower right hand corner.
- Stamp a 1/2″ strip of Whisper White with stars in Gorgeous Grape ink. Secure as shown.
- Secure a strip of ribbon as shown.
- Wrap Silver Thread around your fingers several times and then attach it to the back of a 1-1/2″ black circle as pictured below, then add to your card.
- Color in your adorable duckie and add him to your project with dimensions.

So cute, right? As much as I love the scary, creepy crawly, “BOO”-ness of Halloween, I know that some people prefer the not so scary Halloween projects and I think this one fits the BILL – (see what I did there?).
