A Great CAS Hand Made Card Idea for A Coffee Loving Friend

Need an idea for a hand made card for a friend?  If he or she likes coffee, this is a fun idea.  This card idea is for sure a clean and simple (CAS) idea and is one that doesn't take long to create.

It was based on a card that I have in my newest online class:  Mass Producing Your Greeting Cards.  You can learn more about this class here.

I started with the color palette.  And the colors came from a coffee mug that I saw in a store.  It was a muted color palette, and it stuck with me.  I went with Marina Mist and Pear Pizzazz inks from Stampin' Up.

Each of the three mugs were stamped in Marina Mist and Pear Pizzazz ink, giving me a total of 6.  The rule of design is using odd numbers, and that meant that I only needed 5.  So that 6th one was perfect for the inside.

I love making sure there is some sort of something on the inside of my cards.  It is something that my blog comments often include is a thank you for sharing the inside of the card.  But to me, if they are blank, they actually look nekked!  And no one wants a nekked card!

Now, I did argue with myself on having it all on White or Vanilla card stock.  In the end, White won out.  So all the mugs were on Whisper White and were hand cut out.

The base for this card is Whisper White, 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″, scored at 4-1/4″.  On top is a textured piece of Whisper White, 4″ x 5-1/4″.  I used a texture plate from somewhere.  And honestly, I'm not wild about it.

Why?  I am so used to embossing folders, they give you such a deep texture.  This texture plate doesn't really do it for me.  Can you even tell it was used?  I like the pattern, but it's just so-so for me.  As I try several different things, I will share my opinion on them.  So far, embossing folders are winning for me.

Let's take a look at the card and then we will move onto the sentiment:

I started with the sentiment stamped in Soft Suede ink.  At first, it was Chocolate Chip, but it was too dark for the Pear Pizzazz and Marina Mist, so Soft Suede ink won.

It was stamped onto Whisper White card stock and then die cut using the Chalk Talk Framelit.  And it isn't the entire shape of the framelit.  I die cut it where the sentiment was near the top.  And then you don't even see the bottom of sentiment layer as the coffee cups cover them up.  (Gotta love dimensionals!)

The layout came from a sketch, I just rotated it 90 degrees and went to town.

For the inside, I started with a strip of Pear Pizzazz card stock that was 1″ x 5-1/2″ and had that on the inside.  It wasn't ringing my bell.  Then I tried it with the same embossing plate as the front of the card, and still, it didn't have enough texture.  So I turned to the Dotted Scallop Ribbon Border Punch.  Third times a charm, right?

The final cup was added to the lower left hand corner of the inside, making the inside of the card coordinate with the outside of the card.

Even though I am not thrilled with the texture, I am in love with this card!  I think it is stinkin' cute – and even with all the trials of what worked and what did not work, it has taken me longer to write about it to you than it did to create it, even with cutting out the coffee mugs.

Like I said before, this card is a take off of a sketch that I have in my Mass Producing Online Class.  So if your goal this year is to make more cards, and you want a jump start on it, this is a class for you!

Brief summary on how to create this card:

1.  Stamp each cup on Whisper White card stock in Marina Mist and then again in Pear Pizzazz.  Cut out.

2.  Stamp sentiment on Whisper White card stock and die cut out using Chalk Talk Framelits and your Big Shot.

3.  Dry emboss piece of Whisper White card stock (4″ x 5-1/4″) and adhere to your card base.

4.  Secure sentiment as shown and the coffee cups.

5.  Punch out strip of Pear Pizzazz card stock using Dotted Scallop Ribbon Border Punch and secure to inside.

6.  Finish with remaining coffee cup!
