Halloween Card: Stampin Up Toil & Trouble

Today we are making a Halloween card featuring the Stampin Up Toil & Trouble patterned paper.

This is part of the Toil & Trouble Suite in the 2018 Holiday catalog.

This patterned paper is cute, stunning, fun, and ALREADY COLORED IN 🙂 – and it coordinates with the framelits for even faster card making.

Many stampers have asked me this about it though…

Do you need the stamp set since the paper coordinates with the dies?

Excellent question!

If you are thinking about only getting the dies, please be sure to stock up on the patterned paper!  The paper in the Holiday catalog 99.99% of the time – guesstimate 🙂 – will be retired as soon as it 1)  sells out; 2) the catalog ends beginning of January.  So if you don't have the stamps, the dies – other than the web – kinda become obsolete.

There are only three of the witches on the patterned paper that actually coordinate with the die cut.  6 per total package.  If you want more witches, you will need the stamps.

The broomstick paper does not fit the dies.

All that to say, I do recommend getting both so that you can use your stamps and dies for years to come.

The Project

For today's project, we will be making a card.

The Color Combination

Using the Toil & Trouble paper helped me decided on my color selection.

The Stamping

Since I am using colored in sections from the Toil & Trouble paper, There wasn't much stamping to do.  Just my sentiment on a scrap piece of Whisper White card stock in Gorgeous Grape ink.  Once it was dry, I trimmed it down to a small rectangle.

The Die Cutting

There are several things you will want to die cut if you want to make this card.  Start by die cutting a cute kitty cat from the patterned paper as well as the cauldron.

Next you will need to die cut a black circle.  I chose my Stitched Shapes circle with Basic Black card stock.

Dry Embossing

One of my stampers, Jan, bought a Subtle embossing folder through me when the catalog came out.  She sent me an email just after purchasing it saying, “I must really trust you.  You said I would get a lot of use out of it and it still just looks like a plain folder to me.  We will see how much I really use it – hahaha!”

Then this last week, she ordered TWO MORE!  I emailed her and asked her about it.  I was worried something had happened to hers.

Here is her response:  “My Subtle folder is still going strong.  I love that thing.  Every time I use it though I worry that something MIGHT happen to it.  Now that I have it, I can't imagine not having it.  Just in case they retire it early I ordered two more!!!”

Why share this tale?  Because here I am using it again.  I still can't believe how much I use it.  And to be completely honest, the photography in the Stampin' Up! catalog doesn't show this product well AT ALL!

In the catalog it looks like it does nothing, and I mean nothing.  But what it actually does is take any card stock and make it textured card stock.  Many years ago, we had textured and smooth card stock.  Many of us were sad when the textured card stock retired, but honestly, it was kinda a pain in the batooty to store both kinds of card stock.  With the subtle folder, you just grab your card stock and folder, run it through your Big Shot and BAM! instant textured card stock!

Finishing Touches

The only thing missing from this card was scraps!  You know this 1/4″ strips that you couldn't throw away because you just might need them one day?  Today is that day, my friends!

Grab 3 strips, I went with Gorgeous Grape and Pumpkin Pie, and use them up!  Just by adding them behind your Basic Black circle will make all the difference your final card.

Then finish it all up by putting it onto your Basic Black card base.
