Have you ever looked at a pack of patterned paper and wished you could use all of your favorites on one project?

This card layout lets you do exactly that…and with a fun bonus. Instead of making one card, you'll finish with three!

These cards were inspired by one of our recent Roll the Dice Challenges inside Stamping Family. Every challenge gives us a handful of creative parameters, and it's always amazing to see how one simple idea can blossom into dozens of completely different cards. This layout was my way of making those patterned papers do a little extra work!

Why I Love This Layout

There are plenty of fancy card techniques out there, but sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones you'll reach for again and again.

This design starts with three coordinating patterns from the beautiful Farm Fresh Patterned Paper collection. By making just a couple of cuts and swapping the pieces around, each card ends up with a unique combination of papers while still looking perfectly coordinated.

It's a little like shuffling a deck of cards. ♣️ Every swap creates something fresh.

How to Make All Three Cards

You'll begin with three pieces of patterned paper cut to 3¾” x 5″.

For each piece:

  • Cut 1¼” from the bottom.
  • Then cut 1¼” from the left side of the remaining top rectangle.

Now comes the fun part…

Mix those pieces between all three cards until each card has one piece from each patterned paper. In just a few minutes, you've created three coordinating card fronts without any complicated measuring.

It's one of those layouts that's perfect when you need several cards in a hurry but still want each one to feel a little different.

The Finishing Touches

To pull everything together, I used the This Way Round Dies to create the stitched circle focal point. The cheerful greetings from the Happy Hey Sentiments Stamp Set fit perfectly inside the circle, and I switched up the smaller sentiments on each card for a little variety.

A few enamel dots finish everything off without taking attention away from those gorgeous papers.

The Farm Fresh Patterned Paper really does all the heavy lifting on these cards. Pair it with the Happy Hey Sentiments and This Way Round Dies, and you'll have a design you'll reach for again and again.

Want Even More Layout Inspiration?

One of my favorite things about card sketches is that they take the guesswork out of designing a card. Once you have a layout you love, you can simply swap the papers, stamps, or colors and create something completely new.

If this Cut, Swap & Create layout made you smile, I think you'd also love my Card Sketch of the Month series. Each sketch is designed to help you get more from the supplies you already own, with multiple variations that make it easy to keep creating long after you've made the first card.

It's proof that one great layout can inspire dozens of beautiful cards!

Give It a Try!

If you have patterned paper sitting on your shelf waiting for the “perfect” project, this is it. Grab three coordinating designs, make a few simple cuts, and see how many combinations you can create.

I have a feeling this is one of those layouts you'll come back to every time you want quick, colorful cards that look like you spent much longer making them than you actually did.

Happy stamping!
Meg
