Stampin Up Cat Punch

Are you going to make any Halloween cards this year?  If you are and are looking for a cute idea, look closely at this one.

Today we are using the Stampin Up Cat Punch, but we are focusing the negative result of the punch.

What Does Negative Result Mean?

Normally you would use the Stampin Up Cat Punch to punch out a cat image and use that image.  We are still going to punch with it, but then we are going to set aside the punched piece and focus on the piece that we would normally put in the trash.

But How Do You Do That AND Make a Layering Mat?

That's a smidge more tricky, but not at all hard.  You will need a pencil and either use some math, or scroll down and I will give you the measurements for this particular punch 🙂

Since we are using a punch and not a die, we need to some measuring.  We need to know that our bottom layer is the right size for our punch to punch out our cat in the middle, so we need to find out how far the card stock goes into the punch.

Then we need to punch out the cat in the middle of our Basic Black pieces of card stock (2-3/4″ x 2-3/4″).

Then you will want to take your smaller piece of Whisper White  (2-1/2″ x 2-1/2″) and line it up on your Basic Black square.  Flip it over and trace the outline of your cat onto your Whisper White piece.  Next, grab your cat punch and line it up with your trace lines, then punch.

Adhere these two pieces together.

The Background

This is a GREAT time to use up scraps of card stock or patterned paper.  I used the narrow borders printed on the Toil & Trouble patterned paper.  These strips go across the entire Whisper White (4″ x 5-1/4″) panel.  The top section then looked a little plain, so I added in a scrap of Lemon Lime Twist that is 1/4″ wide.

Finishing Touches

To complete your card, choose your sentiment and stamp it below your patterned paper.  I chose the “trick or treat” sentiment from the new Itty Bitty Greetings stamp set – LOVE THIS ONE!  It is new to the Annual Stampin Up Catalog.  Look at everything in this stamp set:

I decided to stamp it in Tuxedo Memento Black ink.  Next you will want to place that Whisper White panel onto your Basic Black card base (4-1/4″ x 11″).

Then use Dimenionals to secure your cat layers to your card front.

I love the final results of this card, the depth you get by using that negative space from you Stampin Up Cat Punch, mixed with the fun patterns from the Toil & Trouble paper, just makes for a stunning Halloween card.
